Is pressure washing safe for render, roof tiles and timber?
Which surfaces can be pressure washed, and which need a soft wash
Last updated October 2026 · Home Shine
Pressure washing is fast and effective, but it isn't right for every surface. Here's which parts of your home can be pressure washed, and which need a gentler soft wash.
- Pressure washing suits: roofs, concrete driveways, paths and pavers.
- Soft washing suits: painted walls, render, weatherboards and timber.
- The risk comes from using high pressure on the wrong surface, not from pressure washing itself.
Which method suits each surface?
| Surface | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Render | Soft wash | High pressure can etch the surface and lift paint |
| Painted walls and weatherboards | Soft wash | Protects the paint and stops water being forced behind boards |
| Roof tiles | Pressure wash | Removes built-up moss, lichen and dirt |
| Timber fences and decks | Soft wash | Cleans the timber without furring the grain, ready for oiling |
| Concrete, paths and pavers | Pressure wash | Hard surfaces need the force to lift ground-in dirt |
Can pressure washing damage render?
Yes, if the pressure is too high. Render and painted render should be soft washed, which kills mould and algae without blasting the surface.
Is pressure washing safe for roof tiles?
Yes, when it's done properly. We pressure wash roofs to remove moss, lichen and dirt.
Should timber be pressure washed?
We soft wash timber fences and decks. One customer had 45 courtyard fences soft washed ahead of oiling, and said the timber looked "so clean and fresh".
Frequently asked questions
Will washing get water inside my house?
We work carefully around windows and gaps, especially on older homes, so water doesn't get inside.
Can you wash before we paint?
Yes. Washing before a repaint gives the new paint a clean surface to stick to.
